There are many ways you can be fined as a landlord. Some obvious and some not so obvious.
In the news this week I saw that someone had been fined £30,000 for not following HMO licensing rules.
Fines don;t have to be this extravagant of course. You might just be one of the 1m+ tax payers about to get a £100 fine in the post for missing the tax return deadline.
Wherever you sit on the scale of penalties I can all but guarantee that in the days following the fine being handed out this naughty landlord will have asked their advisor if they can claim the fines as an expense.
It hopefully won’t surprise you to learn that they cannot! This makes perfect sense of course – after all why should other taxpayers foot part of the bill for your penalties and fines?
So you cannot claim fines from councils, parking tickets, speeding tickets or HMRC late filing penalties.
