Of all the tax returns submitted by unrepresented taxpayers only 3% used software

HMRC have released some stats which show taxpayers have a lot of work to do if they are going to be ready for quarterly updates.

97% of unrepresented taxpayers used the HMRC online tool. This is the very same tool that is being shut down in April 2026. By April 2027 1.6million taxpayers will need to have found a new way to submit. It’s not just about changing over to third party software but also changing habits that have been in place for many years for some.

There will definitely be a crunch ahead of April 2026 with agents like me getting calls to help people swap over. As I already use Hammock, software specifically made for landlords, I’ll be fine and ready to show others how to get on. Just don’t leave it too late!
