I had a great chat with a chap today who has used a couple of different advisors over the years and told me that the main problem he has now is that his current one is “dry”.
Obviously you’re all surprised to learn that there are dry tax advisors out there but there are! A lot of them! Now this really isn’t an issue for some by the way and it might not be for you. The issue isn’t really about their personality anyway it’s about whether you find them approachable.
If you have an advisor that you don’t feel you can pick the phone up to then this will inevitably cause issues down the line.
There are numerous reasons why this is the case but here are a couple to start you off:
> Your advisor should know you. Not just who you are but should know things about you. If you don’t speak how will they know your plans? If they don’t know your plans how can they help you achieve them?
> If you aren’t in touch where are you getting your advice from? Everyone has questions, big and small, that should be ran past your advisor. Google and Chat are great but they are no replacement for someone that knows you and your affairs and can likely either answer the question in a couple of minutes OR tell you you did the right thing in calling because your questions if a biggie and needs serious attention.
> If you don’t speak regularly how will you know that they don’t drink but do like chocolates? Imagine wasting a bottle of Bailey’s on someone that would have been happy with a diary milk! OK so this is a tease but the first two points should be enough to remind you to speak to your advisor.
